The Mary's Monarch Collection is inspired by the life of Mary Madison Randolph and her connection to monarch butterflies.
In December 2020, we lost Mary Madison (aka Mei Mei) to suicide. She had been battling multiple mental health conditions, some brought on by trauma, some brought on by genetics, and some I know only she could speak to. My sister's and I grew up close with our cousins Mei Mei and her sister Hagan. We all attended camp together for 6 wks every summer, we all even got matching moon tattoos on our butts so that we could "moon" people. Mei Mei lit up every room she walked into, she was down for literally adventure no matter how crazy, she made me feel not so alone in my own mental health struggles.
There are a lot of misconceptions about this topic, but my hope is as we talk more about this topic and provide resources to help those that are struggling, that we can move past those misconceptions and prevent future deaths like Mei Mei's. That being said, 20% of all online sales through March 2nd will go to the American Foundations for Suicide Prevention.
Before her death, Mei Mei was going to a support/therapy center where she lived in Santa Barbara. During their lunch break, they would hang outside in the courtyard where occasionally they would see monarch butterflies. The butterflies avoided humans as much as they could, but would always land on Mei Mei. For me, her spirit lives on through them. They taught us strength, determination, perseverance, love, beauty, grace, and elegance.
